My reflections this week have taken me in an interesting direction. I suppose it’s a result of seeing pictures of the melting ice in Greenland and the Arctic as well as the fires in the Amazon. Have you been affected as well? I asked myself, “Why have I felt the impact of these so strongly?” On the surface the answer seemed easy. I found the destruction unbelievable. The impact on the earth, environment, air quality, water, animals, nature, and humanity are far reaching for many years to come and many are irreversible. “It’s real”, I reminded myself.

As I sat with this more I began to see my role in a deeper way – my role as a steward of these resources. After all, my time here on the earth is limited and so are the earth’s resources. We are all visitors. Yes, we may continue to return as we volunteer to assist in the evolution of consciousness but the present is now and what’s real! So, what can we do?

I was struck by a quote from Wendell Berry, an American Novelist, poet, essayist, environmental activist, cultural critic, and farmer,“. . .the care of the earth is our most ancient and most worthy, after all, our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it, and to foster its renewal, is our only legitimate hope.” I wondered, “How much do I take the earth for granted?” I felt his words deeply as I reflected on the destruction that’s occurring right now. Some is created by human beings and some is attributed to changes in our climate.

In the past I’ve described us as Master Gardeners of our inner world. We are responsible for the design, quality of the soil, nourishment, seeds that we plant, and the weeds we remove. As we create our inner gardens we make conscious choices about what we cultivate, don’t we? As long as I am a visitor I feel this imagery applies to me as a steward of its resources. How does it work?

Bring your awareness to your heart space and imagine your inner garden. What does it smell like? What colors do you see? What sounds do you hear? What are you growing? Are there flowers, trees, lakes, forests, oceans, animals, etc. Remember, this is your garden and there are no limits. Go for it! What about feelings like, love, kindness, acceptance, beauty, happiness, and so much more? Why not? Remember, you’re the Master Gardener and can create anything you want in your inner world.

Now, imagine your inner garden in the outer world. What actions can you take to bring some aspects forward? For example, how can you help prevent destruction of the earth? How informed are you? Are there groups or individuals that you resonate with that are making a difference through education or action? Are you willing to reach out to them? Are there simple things that can be done daily? For example, do you recycle, minimize or eliminate using plastics, or compost where it’s feasible? If you’re interested in being a guardian of a pet will you seek one from a shelter? What about the use of water? Are you mindful of how much you use? What role does renewable energy play? What feelings are you expressing more of – love, kindness, and acceptance, for example?

Being a good steward of the earth’s resources for the limited time we visit is essential. Living and choosing more consciously is key. Think about it. What will be left for those who follow us if we don’t? Remember, we are visitors after all. Let’s leave the earth in the best shape we can. Consciously create aspects of your inner garden in the outer world using your limitless creativity. It’s possible! As the Dalai Lama has said, “The planet does not need more ‘successful people’. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers and lovers of all kinds. It needs people to live well in their places. It needs people with moral courage willing to join the struggle to make the world habitable and humane and these qualities have little to do with success as our culture is the set.”

I would love to hear your thoughts.
