So much chaos continues to swirl all around us. Everyone is trying to navigate it in the best way they can. In spite of this one of the common themes I find as I work with people is helping them learn how to love and accept oneself. Often the conversation begins with an expressed desire to find and be in an intimate romantic relationship. There’s nothing wrong with this is there? Not really. However, where do we begin to look for love? Is it outside ourself or within ourself?

Rumi has said, “Your task is not to seek for Love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Some of the most challenging opportunities we have are those that remove old beliefs and habits. Releasing all that we are not so that we can lean more into accepting who we truly are – beautiful beings of light and love. Our challenge is to remember this and embrace it unapologetically! What do you think?

Frequently quoted author, C. JoyBell C. eloquently states, “The most adventurous journey to embark on; is the journey to yourself, the most exciting thing to discover; is who you really are, the most treasured pieces you can find; are all pieces of you, the most special portrait you can recognize, is the portrait of your soul.” The journey to yourself is one of the greatest and magical journeys you can embark upon while you’re here on Earth. I often call it “The Journey Home” to your true self which is eternal and is LOVE. I know you’ve heard me say this before, right?

Each one of us has an individual and unique set of experiences that we cocreate while we’re here. Sometimes we travel alone and sometimes we journey with others. Along this journey there are many who seek and enter into relationships. Think about the ones you have experienced. How did you feel when you looked for someone to love who you thought “completed” you? Did you have a different experience when you knew your own value and worth – when you loved and accepted yourself enough to know that you were totally whole and complete all along without looking for a partner? Was the quality of the relationship different? Was it more satisfying? Was there mutual respect, honoring, and support? Was love freely given and received by both parties? Who deserves your love more – you or someone else?

How will your life and relationships change if you first learn to accept and love yourself? Whew. Some of you may be thinking this feels pretty scary. Some people say that accepting oneself is the most scary thing there is. Take a few deep breaths right now with your eyes closed and bring your awareness into your heart space. Imagine yourself totally in love with YOU. How do you feel? Now, take a few more deep breaths and imagine that you fully accept YOU. Yes, maybe there are things that you want to change and choices that you made you wish were different but feel the YOU that is here right now. The YOU that is embracing and accepting YOU with LOVE. Sit with you for a few moments as you breathe normally. Feel the past releasing, the present relaxing, and the future opening.

Eckhart Tolle, author and spiritual teacher describes it this way, “Something inside you emerges . . . An innate, indwelling peace, stillness, aliveness. It is the unconditioned, who you are in your essence. It is what you had been looking for in the love object. It is yourself.” Does this resonate with you? Loving and accepting yourself can be one of the greatest gifts you give yourself. In so doing you allow for the richness of your relationships to grow. Vulnerability is perceived as a strength. Trust is a strong bond. Love is freely given. Honor, respect, and support create pillars of strength as well. Truly, the love you are seeking is yourself!
