For things to reveal themselves to us, we need to be ready to abandon our views about them.” Thich Nhat Hanh

Lately, it seems that my journey and growth opportunities have been all about surrender and trust. I mentioned last week that a family member has been experiencing a health issue for almost a month. During this time I’ve felt fear, uncertainty, helplessness, love, worry, frustration, and gratitude. In other words my emotions have had highs and lows! I’m sure that many of you have been through similar situations.

Being unable to control the outcome of this situation has been challenging for me to say the least. I’ve had moments where I’ve said, “Let’s get this show on the road! It’s time!” It made me feel good to say it although it didn’t change things. LOL Of course, I recognize that I’m not in charge! Do you know what I mean? I’ve also had moments where I could laugh at myself, breathe deeply, move into my heart and feel grateful for the moment and presence of my loved one. Lean into surrender and trust more!

I’ve been fortunate to have wonderful support from friends who care and who allow me to be me with full acceptance. My habit throughout life has been to take care of others and be “the strong one”! Sound familiar? I accept who I’ve been and who I’m becoming more of. I’m more comfortable these days with revealing more of me and what I’m feeling. It gets easier with practice! At least it has for me. At first, it just felt kind of weird.

I’ve also learned that others care and want to help and be supportive. Remaining open to receive help and be vulnerable isn’t a weakness! It isn’t a one way street so to speak. By acknowledging that I don’t have all of the answers and let go of what I think should happen next really provides opportunities for answers to be revealed. This is a big shift for me as I continue to learn how to lean into surrender and trust more!

Riding the wave of emotions and being ok with it has been another big step. Flowing with the energy of change has also been key. Letting go of preplanned activities and re-evaluating priorities are also important. So, leaning more into surrender and trust has helped me even when my thoughts were driving me crazy.

I realize that what I’ve been going through isn’t unique. I feel like it is a small part of the bigger picture of what’s happening in the world – shootings, hurricanes and fires, for example. Things are changing in many ways. I am grateful that I still have my loved one, family, home, and friends. I’m alive and others are suffering significantly. Although it may seem challenging please take time to let those you love know how much they mean to you.

Take time to breathe in the beauty and love that surrounds you and breathe out the suffering and challenges you face several times a day. Be open to change, live in and enjoy the present moment; and express your gratitude everyday.

Please know that you are loved and learn to lean into surrender and trust more!
