I surrender to it, and by surrendering, I control it.

Robert Jordan, American author

I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful if you celebrate it! I find it hard to believe it’s December already and we’re looking at a New Year on the horizon. The invitation to ‘let go’ of things that no longer serve us is still here. Continue cleaning your inner closets!

My old friend, control, has seemed quiet. I’ve felt free! Since the middle of September I’ve been journeying with a healing process for a foot injury and I’ve experienced a lot of progress and feelings of optimism. A few days ago I had an MRI and just found out I have a stress fracture in one of the bones in my foot after all of this time! I have to say that receiving this unexpected news was disappointing and frustrating. I’m sharing this with you because my expectation was that my foot was completely healed! Expect the unexpected, right? A good lesson to remember.

Well, it’s back to the beginning it seems. I’ll be wearing a walking boot for 6 weeks. Receiving this news has brought a few things into my awareness. Feeling out of control and losing freedom are big ones. Don’t get me wrong, please. I understand that both of these are illusions but nevertheless the feelings are real for me. Maybe you’ve had similar experiences. I understand that my experience of this is up to me! I can choose to invite my friends to a ‘pity party’ or I can accept what is and move forward creating the best experience I can have. I choose to move forward! Elkhart Tolle, Spiritual teacher and author reminds us to “Accept – then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it. Always work with it, not against it . . . This will miraculously transform your whole life.” In choosing, accepting, and surrendering I feel more in control! BE more like the river flowing around obstacles! Does that make sense?

The act to look at this experience through the lens of gratitude instead of limitation and restriction made a difference. Once I began to reflect on the many things I’m grateful for my attitude began to shift. It’s a powerful tool! Once again, I feel more in control. Accepting that healing is taking place as needed rather than expecting my foot to heal in a certain amount of time is another lesson I’m learning. I’m finding strength in surrender and feel so much better for it. Gautama Buddha, Founder of Buddhism has said, “Serenity comes when you trade expectations for acceptance.” I agree. I feel more inner peace and recognize how temporary this is! I trust as you navigate challenges in your lives that you will look through the lens of gratitude; and find inner peace and strength as you accept, surrender, then act. I surrender!
