The best way to take care of the future is take care of the present moment.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk, peace activist

So much going on in the world and in our country! Chaos seems non-stop! Do you feel like you’re on a roller coaster at times? Are you holding on to your hats? Would you rather stay in bed and not face the day sometimes? In the midst of what feels overwhelming at times please remember that you can control how you respond to everything. That defines your experience.

I don’t know about you but when I feel like things are out of control it seems like there’s no way out. That’s when I remind myself to take deep breaths and remember that I create my reality; I’m not a victim or martyr; and I have choices that I can make. This is what I can control! Thich Nhat Hanh also tells us that, “We have more possibilities available in each moment than we realize.” It’s easy to lose sight of this when we feel out of control! I find when I’m in this state I begin to second guess my decisions and choices. My thoughts are going 90 miles an hour. I forget all of the times I’ve responded to situations, including chaotic ones, and the choice I’ve made has been great!

Hmmm. So why during unfamiliar or chaotic times does this happen? Why don’t I have faith in me any longer? It happens less and less. I understand that, for me, this is part of the journey of awakening. It’s one of reclaiming my power and having faith in myself. It’s also a journey of becoming more loving, compassionate, and kind while helping others. I really don’t want other people making decisions for me or telling me what to do. In fact, when that happens I feel a negative physical reaction in my body. Trusting and having faith in my choices is important. There are so many opportunities to practice. Part of the journey is also letting go of old beliefs and habits.

What if I let go of what I’ve been told about nutrition and health for example. What if I listened to my body? Have you noticed that your body can tell you a lot? It becomes more challenging to “hear” what your body is telling you with chaos and plenty of distractions happening in your life. What will it take for you to have faith in trusting what you know to be true for you and your nutrition and health? Can you remember the times in your life when your instincts and knowing about what’s best for you proved to be true? Remember to have faith in you and your ability to respond in ways that are best for you during chaotic times.

After all, the future is created by the choices that are being made in this moment. Yes, each one of us contributes to the whole through our choices and experiences but be courageous, trust, and have faith in the power of you! I’m reminded often of the old Indiana Jones movies where he takes a leap of faith and steps into what seems like a huge drop into nothing. Steps appear. Martin Luther King, Jr., Baptist minister and activist reminds us that, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” So many possibilities are available if we are willing to take that first step and have faith in ourselves. Are you ready to take that leap?
