~ Helen Keller, American author, political activist and lecturer
In the midst of chaos, pandemic, staying home, political division, and protests this week I found myself seeking more and more beauty to find inner peace. I don’t mean to sound like a broken record but I believe that peace begins within me and so does beauty! I have felt my soul sigh with a deep heartfelt knowing that beauty, hope, peace, and love are possible regardless of what’s happening in the world. It’s ours to choose and experience.
I’ve wondered, “How often do I take beauty for granted? Does beauty really reside within me?” Staying at home has provided time to become more aware of beauty in my life. It begins with the inner beauty I hold which can’t be seen or touched. It’s felt. In addition, there’s external beauty that includes: vibrant colors, fragrant flowers, birds singing, chalk art on the sidewalks, clouds in the sky, my home and health, and my relationships to name a few. How is this moment different? I feel beauty from my heart and soul in ways that seem deeper and more visceral. When I feel like this there is no room for fear, judgment, or self-doubt. It’s a conscious acknowledgment of feeling, seeing, hearing, accepting, and appreciating what’s within me as well as around me – not thinking or intellectualizing.
The opportunity to BE more than constantly doing has contributed to these heightened awarenesses. Thich Nhat Hanh has said, “The mind can go in a thousand directions but on the beautiful path I walk in peace. With each step the wind blows. With each step a flower blooms.” Quieting my thoughts during my meditations provides a way to immerse myself in beauty and walk in peace, so to speak. When I’m in this state of BEING I see choices and answers more clearly. It’s from this centered place that I believe we can find our own unique beautiful path walking in peace. Then it becomes easier to choose how to become more engaged and active in the world, being the change we want to see happen.
I realize that the distractions we’re faced with right now can feel overwhelming. I find that I must set aside time to pull away from them consciously in order to meditate, quiet my thoughts and then step once again onto the path of beauty and peace. First, it happens in the inner and then I can move more peacefully in the outer world. I’m reminded of Louis Armstrong, American trumpeter, composer, vocalist, and actor’s timeless lyrics of “What a Wonderful World.” He writes, “The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky are also on the faces of people going by. I see friends shaking hands saying, “How do you do?” They’re really saying I love you.”
The invitation this week is to feel beauty from your heart. In spite of the chaos what kind of world do you see or imagine? Does it include rainbows on the faces of people going by or is it more? In spite of social distancing can you see friends virtually shaking hands saying I love you? What a wonderful world we can create together! Can you feel the beauty deep within your heart and soul?
I love you!
