“Keeping your body healthy is an expression of gratitude to the whole cosmos-the trees, the clouds, everything.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Buddhist monk

I’m learning not to take my good health for granted! Every morning I express my gratitude for being mobile, clear of mind, happy, and overall healthy. Why is it important to me? Over the past 5 years I’ve experienced loss of family and friends to illness, injury, dementia and Alzheimer’s. I’m sure that many of you have as well. For many years I took my good health for granted. Some of you might think that I even abused it at times. Now, I apologize to my body for any mistreatment and thank it for still serving me well! Yes, I talk to my body! Doesn’t everyone?

I’ve become more consciously aware of my body and as my awakening journey has deepened I have created a more conscious relationship with it. I understand that it is the home of my precious eternal essence which I call soul and keeping it healthy for as long as my journey on earth continues is important. It’s a choice each one of us is invited to make.

The journey of maintaining good health is a holistic one in my opinion. It includes having a healthy mind, body, and spirit! If the focus is only physical then imagine how negative thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs can impact your body. What added stress is created consciously or unconsciously on your physical body and how does it affect your health? Canadian professional ice hockey player, Maxime Lagace, has said, “The more you understand yourself, the more silence there is, the healthier you are.” How true.

This is where meditation, prayer, walking in nature, breathing exercises, and immersing yourself in beauty can help. How? These are tools that can be used to quiet racing thoughts, calm a rapid heartbeat, connect with something greater, and help to see situations more clearly. You may even feel an inner peace and silence that seems elusive during a busy day! Think of these tools as ways to help you go home to yourself! Does that make sense? When you practice them you may feel more like yourself and be more optimistic. You may smile more, love more, appreciate more, forgive more, and feel like you have more freedom. You may even feel healthier!

Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Buddhist monk, has said, “You are what you want to become. Why search anymore? You are a wonderful manifestation. The whole universe has come together to make your existence possible. There is nothing that is not you. The kingdom of God, the Pure hand, nirvana, happiness and liberation are all you.” Imagine and embrace the thought that you are more than you think if you can. Keeping your body healthy is one way to express your gratitude. “You are already what you want to become” as Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us. How beautiful!
